Is it rare for someone who is attractive to be unpopular?

Definitely. I see fine nerdy girls all the time. People in highschool can't answer this questions because they are to use to seeing pretty girls. After you are out of highschool a few years alot of the nerdy girls you didn't look twice at in highschool look alot better.
